# Best Practice Series: Process Consistency

Our top tips for making your processes consistent with Labstep

_One of Labstep's aims is to reduce manual data entry and encourage process consistency for data integrity. From the start, we recommend using these three things to achieve this._

# **1) Protocols**

Utilise [protocols](https://help.labstep.com/en/articles/5493023-using-protocols-on-labstep.md) for anything that is done more than once. If you find yourself repeating certain procedures or entering the same metadata fields more than once, you should create a protocol for this process. You would be able to specify data fields, output files, materials, timings and more with Labstep's protocol module.

Users can also mark specific data fields for protocols as required. You can use the [completion checklist](https://help.labstep.com/en/articles/5493023-using-protocols-on-labstep.md#h_c56acccabe) for protocols, so you will be given a warning notification if certain data elements or materials are missing from a protocol.

# **2) Experiment Templates**

Set up experiment templates that will already have your experiment workflow configured and pre-populated. Experiment templates can be used to encourage a consistent structure to the entry or to make it quicker to run common workflows of protocols.

Additionally, experiment templates ensure data integrity. They encourage the use of the same data elements and data slots, helping with naming, tracking and finding data and materials.

# **3) Signatures**

Labstep users can add and request signatures from within the 'Review' tab. You can add as many signatures as you like to an experiment that you can customise if required.

When you select "Add Signature" you will be given the option to add a statement to the signature. Signature statements help make sure that everyone involved with the experiment understands why you have signed and at what part of the review process.
