Your inventory is made up of resources and resource items. Labstep resources are completely customisable. Track commercial products like chemicals and supplies, or lab made items such as buffers, plasmids, cell lines and oligos. Easily create specific fields for any resource category and add item attributes relevant to your lab. Use these resources to stay on top of your inventory or attach them to protocols and resources to keep accurate and reproducible records.

What are the features do Labstep resources have?

Resources are the best way to manage your inventory in Labstep. You can also attach resources to protocols and experiments so you know exactly what to use to reproduce a protocol or experiment. You can do the following things with resources:

  • Share and duplicate.
  • See who created the resource and when.
  • Attach a photo of the resource
  • Create items/lots/batches of this resource to attach in experiments
  • Add customisable metadata with various data types, such as, files and tables.
  • Add comments.
  • View the full activity of the resource i.e. what experiments or protocols it was used in.

Resources can be created by selecting "New Resources" from within the inventory module. Alternatively, you can select "Import" to bulk import your inventory from a csv or Excel file. Click here for more information on the resource import tool.

Resource items

Resource items refer to specific items of a resource in your inventory. These are always associated to a particular resource and can be attached to experiments only e.g. Ethanol bottle 1. You can have multiple resource items associated with a resource. This feature is great for tracking which batch or lot of a resource you used in an experiment to help troubleshoot experiments when they have gone wrong.

Resource items can be created and managed from the "Items" tab.

You can also set the default amount for new items so that "Amount in stock" is automatically populated for new items.

Metadata and categories

Both resources and resource items have a "Metadata" tab which can be used to store important information. Resource metadata fields can be quickly populated by selecting a category, such as Chemical or Organism. You can also create new metadata fields by selecting "Add metadata field"

To select a category, click "add resource category". You are then able to search across all of your categories.

Once a category has been selected, you will be able to see all the metadata fields associated with the category. Click "Add to resource" on the specific category field to add a value.

Requesting more of a resource

When you need something for your research, more often than not, someone else has to do the purchase for you. Order requests are an easy way to detail all the information about an item so that person in your team responsible for purchasing can get you the right thing. The order request is also used for the purchaser to keep the item requester in the loop. You can add the purchase information, such as PO, shipping information and price paid. Find out more here.

To create a request more items of a resource, on the resource select "Request" on the top bar. When the items are received you can add these items to the resource from within the order request.
